Conference Attendees Weigh In on the Future of Agriculture
Tuesday, November 5, 2013
Providing food for a growing population, attracting young people to the field and educating the public about agriculture were among the issues important to ag professionals we surveyed at Commodity Classic 2013 and Potato Expo 2013. Questions focused on the future of agriculture and what agribusinesses need to be successful in the industry.
Attendees were asked about their biggest hope for the future of agriculture and 48% of respondents hope there is a sufficient food supply for a growing population. The world population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050 and farmers will need to double food production to keep pace with that growth. Our-Commitment has enabled us to meet the challenges of the past and offers us our best hope for the future. Respondents were also eager to attract more young people to the agriculture field. USDA predicts that there will be an annual deficit of 54,000 jobs in agriculture from 2010 to 2015. That’s an incredible number of jobs to be filled in order for companies like Bayer CropScience, as well as family farms across the U.S., to continue the mission of feeding a hungry planet.
The next question focused on how Bayer CropScience can adapt to fit the needs of agribusinesses. We asked, “What can Bayer CropScience do to help your farm or agribusiness?” 50% of respondents said they would like Bayer CropScience to offer more integrated solutions for improving yield. The second most popular answer showed that respondents want us to “increase campaigns to help educate the public about agriculture.” We currently have programs aimed at inspiring agriculture learning from kindergarten to grade 12, and throughout college and graduate-study experiences. We’re committed to developing future leaders and developing solutions to help farmers succeed on and off the field.
Finally, we asked attendees what would be the most beneficial to their success in the industry and again respondents wished for access to integrated solutions for improving yield. Bayer CropScience is notable in our industry for offering a truly comprehensive range of integrated crop solutions to meet customers’ needs. Our high value seeds, innovative chemical and biological crop protection solutions as well as our extensive service backup for modern, sustainable agriculture will play a significant role in propelling farming`s future, controlling a broad spectrum of pests and diseases and offering farmers integrated pest management programs to minimize development of resistance and help maximize crop and profit yields. Respondents also wished for more coverage of agriculture on mainstream media and training and tools to keep up with an ever-changing industry.
