What's Eating at America's Next Generation of Farmers?
Monday, March 10, 2014
Two weeks ago, young “ag-vocates” across the country celebrated FFA Week, a tradition that began over 50 years ago. We enjoyed following the conversations surrounding the celebration on Twitter. Thousands of students across the country shared their commitment to the future of farming through social media. Even country music star Dierks Bentley thanked the ag supporters on YouTube!
So what’s on the minds of millennial farmers? The answers might surprise you. Our survey from the 2013 National FFA Convention finds a group troubled by the nation’s perception of modern ag. They wish consumers were better informed and more understanding.
And what’s number one on their wish list? It’s not greater business knowledge or more training. Believe it or not, it’s a helping hand. Fifty-two percent of FFA members say that having a mentor would be most beneficial to their careers.
