Today, Bayer CropScience’s Head of Trait Research, Dr. Catherine Feuillet, spoke at the 2014 Borlaug Dialogue. We are honored to have contributed to this international conference tackling global food security. Organized in conjunction with World Food Day and the World Food Prize Foundation, this year’s Borlaug Dialogue addressed “The Greatest Challenge in Human History: Can We Sustainably Feed the 9 Billion People on our Planet by the Year 2050?.”
The Borlaug Dialogue is named after famous biologist, Norman Borlaug, who is credited with leading the Green Revolution in the 1960s and 70s. Through his research, Borlaug developed high yield and disease resistant wheat – along with hybrid seeds, crop protection, new methods of irrigation, and modernization of management techniques. His innovative solutions were instrumental in combating hunger and feeding a hungry world.
Dr. Feuillet spoke about Bayer CropScience’s commitment to wheat research and our recent investment to support sustainable growth in wheat productivity. The presentation, Bayer CropScience: A partner for achieving Borlaug’s dream for wheat, focused on the need for more wheat research and Bayer CropScience’s commitment to the crop.
The challenges in wheat are expected to escalate as the population expands. Climate change, water scarcity, new diseases, and price increases will impact not only the supply of wheat, but also the accessibility.
With these approaching obstacles, new technology is needed. Growers need enhanced technology to meet future food demand sustainability. Bayer CropScience is prepared to find solutions. CEO Liam Condon announced, “We have mapped out a comprehensive 10-year plan to invest EUR 1.5 billion in the research and development of new solutions for wheat through 2020 – encompassing both seed and crop protection products.”
This investment will drive industry leading research on crop protection, seeds, and innovative traits to bring new yield, develop support services for best practice. Bayer CropScience is committed to investing in wheat, improving on Borlaug’s innovative solutions, and contributing to the next green revolution to feed a hungry world.
We are proud to have participated in the Borlaug Dialogues, elevating hunger issues to find collaborative global solutions. For more updates on Dr. Catherine Feuillet’s participation in the Borlaug Dialogues, follow us at @Bayer4CropUS on Twitter.
