Bayer Citrus Matters initiative

Whether it’s enjoying refreshing lemonade on a hot, summer’s day or sharing a juicy Navel orange with my sons when they got home from school, some of my favorite memories involve the citrus fruit that grows fresh across California. However, the California citrus industry, which produces 80 percent of fresh market citrus in the U.S., is facing a major threat from a tiny insect and the incurable disease it can spread to the citrus trees in your own backyard.

On March 5, Bayer CropScience and California Citrus Mutual launched #CitrusMatters, a year-long campaign geared at raising awareness of the Huanglongbing (HLB) disease and the devastating impact it could pose to California’s $2.4 billion citrus industry.

This campaign utilizes an educational website, www.citrusmatters.us, and the social media hashtag #CitrusMatters to educate California residents about the dangers of HLB and empower them to take action to help prevent the spread of the disease. With every share of the hashtag #CitrusMatters between now and September 30, Bayer CropScience will contribute $1, up to $25,000, to California Citrus Mutual in support of prevention, detection and research on this devastating disease.

In addition to sharing the #CitrusMatters hashtag, here are a few other ways you can join us in our mission to save California citrus:

  1. pin 2 homeownerIf you are a California resident, you can access additional resources specific to your area by visiting CaliforniaCitrusThreat.org. Be sure to have your trees checked if you think they might be infected. Call the California Department of Food and Agriculture at 1-800-491-1899 for more information.

  2. Citrus tree owners in California and other citrus-growing regions should become familiar with treatment options, including Bayer Advanced™'s portfolio of products, along with other best management practices outlined on CitrusMatters.us. Learn more about the signs and the treatment options available for your citrus trees.

  3. Whether you are a citrus grower, have a citrus tree in your yard or simply enjoy a juicy orange, spread the word about HLB and share why you love citrus with your friends and family. Visit the #CitrusMatters website to learn more and share a campaign pin!

The campaign also encourages commercial citrus growers to spread the word about the disease throughout their communities to become advocates for the industry.

It’s impossible to image our lives without citrus. Hopefully, with your help, we’ll never have to be without the fresh California citrus fruit that we love.
