Meet Isha Jog, the final delegate selected to represent the U.S. at this year’s Youth Ag Summit. At the summit, 100 of the world’s top young minds will work together on solutions for feeding a growing world population.
Hello! My name is Isha Jog, and I am a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago. I am thrilled to participate in the 2015 Youth Agriculture Summit this August in Canberra, Australia. I was born in India, moved to the United States of America when I was 3 and grew up in a pleasant Midwest suburb. Now that I am a college student living in the third largest city in the country, I am experiencing yet another type of environment.
When I was in elementary school, I went on a field trip to volunteer at an organization called “Feed My Starving Children”. This organization has several facilities around the country. Volunteers stay for a few hours and pack bags and boxes of chicken, soy, rice, and veggies. All of this food is then shipped to over seventy countries in the world, like Haiti and Nicaragua, and personally delivered to malnourished children and families. I immediately fell in love with this organization and its mission, so I began to volunteer there quite often. Through this venue, I started to learn more about the agriculture procedures, methods, and issues that exist in our world today.
I became extremely invested in learning more about the food problems that children face in my own community as well as those in my birthplace of Nagpur, India. Research has shown that 40% of all available food in the U.S. goes straight to waste. I believe that college students like myself can create venues for this wasted food to be distributed properly and fairly. I am determined to create change by decreasing the number of children who go to bed hungry each night.
It is going to be an absolute honor to represent my home country at this year’s summit! I look forward to meeting the delegates from the other nations and collaborating with them to come up with innovative solutions. I am excited to turn our thoughts into actions and see change happen globally. I am ready to sink my teeth into the world’s biggest problem!
