Bayer Beekeeper with bee box

By: Herbert Everhart, 2014 Bayer Bee Care Community Leadership Award winner

A little less than a year ago I received the 2014 Bayer Bee Care Community Leadership Award. My company, Eversweet Apiaries, hosts free workshops, classes and seminars for the general public that teach about honey bees and beekeeping basics. With the grant money, we purchased two observation hives and protective clothing to enhance the workshops. These additions allow individuals who have never seen inside a bee hive to witness one firsthand. Our workshops draw a number of people, including children – who love to find the queen bee. While searching for the queen, the children ask thoughtful questions and especially enjoy the honey sticks that we offer.

We were also able to donate one thousand dollars’ worth of equipment to both our youth program and veterans program. This equipment included protective clothing, complete hives, hive tools and hive parts.

It’s hard to imagine accomplishing all of this without the Bayer Bee Care Community Leadership Award. Applications are currently open for the 2015 award through April 3, 2015. I encourage any beekeeper who uses beekeeping to enrich his/her community to apply.
