Why Velum® Prime Is a Must Have for Potato Growers Looking to Manage Nematodes
Thursday, March 17, 2016
2016 is shaping up to be a great year! Velum® Prime, a new, non-fumigant nematicide with fungicide benefits, recently received federal approval for use on potatoes. This a significant step toward our efforts to introduce a much needed nematicide/fungicide tool into the market place. With $3.8 billion worth of potatoes produced last year, early protection against nematodes and disease to help maximize yields and quality is a must.
Velum Prime is now registered for application early in the potato growing season via overhead chemigation during the 6- to12- inch rosette growth stage. Velum Prime works rapidly to immobilize nematodes, killing them within one to two hours after contact. The active ingredient then moves systemically throughout plant tissues, suppressing key economic potato diseases such as white mold and early blight. Both of these disease can be a detriment to overall plant health. Because of the growing conditions in the Pacific Northwest, white mold has potentially the most impact.
Here are three reasons why Velum Prime is a must for potato growers:
- Convenience – It offers reliable protection for helping secure yields and marketability while being easy to handle and apply.
- Sustainable - Velum Prime offers growers an effective, low-use rate and economical nematicide with a favorable environmental and human safety profile.
- Integrated Pest Management – Field trials have shown that Velum Prime significantly increases yields and has an even greater impact when used in concert with a protection program that includes products such as Movento® insecticide and Luna® Tranquility fungicide.
