Bayer CropScience Asks for Commitments, Makes Donations at Farm Progress Show

Increase yields, decrease hunger is theme of I Farm to Feed the World exhibit.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (Aug. 27, 2010) – At the 2010 Farm Progress Show, Bayer CropScience asks U.S. farmers to join the effort of I Farm to Feed the World by pledging to increase yields and improve crop quality while minimizing their environmental impact. In honor of the growers’ commitments, Bayer CropScience will work to decrease hunger in the short term with donations to local Midwest food banks.

“Farming to feed the world is a big task, and one filled with challenge, hope and opportunity for agriculture,” says Bill Buckner, President and CEO of Bayer CropScience. “The donations by Bayer CropScience to local food banks will be a starting point for decreasing hunger. We invite growers to share in this celebration of American agriculture at the Farm Progress Show as we, as an industry, look to the task before us and toward solutions that will help U.S. growers meet the ever-increasing demand for affordable and high quality food, feed and fiber.”

In the Bayer CropScience booth (#1126) at the Farm Progress Show, growers will have the opportunity to sign the I Farm to Feed the World commitment globe. The large, specially designed globe represents the obligation, hope and opportunity of agriculture artistically. For every signature collected, Bayer CropScience will donate $5 to a local Feeding America food bank, up to $15,000.

“This partnership with American growers to increase yields and decrease hunger does not end with the food bank donations,” says Buckner. “Bayer CropScience is committed to the challenge through on-going initiatives in innovation, sustainability and education, and all three focus areas will be showcased at the company’s booth.”

For innovation and sustainability, Bayer CropScience will be reporting on several new products that can help increase corn and soybean yields, including Stratego® YLD fungicide, Poncho®/VOTiVOTM seed treatment and Capreno® herbicide. Bayer CropScience will also have an in-booth demonstration comparing the company’s low-dose herbicides with competitive products to show how low-dose technologies contribute to more sustainable practices.

For its commitment to education, Bayer CropScience has donated a Polaris Ranger Rzr® to the Iowa FFA Foundation for its raffle fundraiser. At the Farm Progress Show, Iowa state FFA officers will sell raffle tickets to win the Rzr.

Also, one master’s student will be sharing how Bayer CropScience supports his path to a career in agriculture through the GRAD program. The GRAD program provides tuition assistance, as well as an environment for students to complete their thesis research.

A third educational feature will be a Making Science Make Sense® station in the Bayer booth. Bayer employees will facilitate hands-on learning with visiting youth. Making Science Make Sense is a company program that brings science experiments into schools to reinforce the importance of science education.

“The Bayer CropScience exhibit has a lot to offer this year’s Farm Progress Show visitors,” adds Buckner. “We look forward to sharing a sample of our commitments to innovation, sustainability and education, and we hope that you will join the united effort to feed the growing world.”

This year’s Farm Progress Show is August 31-September 2 in Boone, Iowa.
