Bayer CropScience supports worldwide battle against malaria

LifeNet mosquito nets submitted to the WHO for evaluation, search for new active ingredients to combat the Anopheles mosquito

Monheim, April 23, 2010 - Bayer CropScience is supporting the worldwide battle against malaria with innovative solutions. Researchers from Bayer CropScience have developed enhanced mosquito nets. They are made of polypropylene fibers in which the WHO-recommended active ingredient deltamethrin is incorporated directly; they are therefore more long-lasting than nets currently available on the market. These nets were recently submitted to the WHO for evaluation. The company plans to market them under the brand name LifeNet in the coming years. In addition, Bayer CropScience is working together with the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) based in Liverpool, United Kingdom, on a joint project devoted to searching for new insecticidal active ingredients that are effective against mosquitoes and other disease-transmitting insects.

To mark this year's World Malaria Day on April 25, Bayer CropScience is drawing attention to the fact that this severe infectious disease is continuing to spread. Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) expect the areas in which the Anopheles mosquito is endemic and where malaria is therefore prevalent to grow as a result of increasing global warming. Cases of malaria will then occur in regions in which the disease was previously never found. The WHO estimates that some 3.3 billion people worldwide - half the world's population - are at risk of infection.
