Double Dose of V5 Crop Protection Pays Dividends for Corn Growers

Herbicide, fungicide application combines convenience, yield protection

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. April 25, 2011 – Herbicide applications on V5 corn to control late-season weeds have long been common. Today, producers can apply Stratego® YLD fungicide during the same pass – even in the same tankmix – as postemergence herbicides, such as Laudis® herbicide.

This unique tankmix, applied at the V5 growth stage, offers more yield protection than applying a herbicide alone. Including Stratego YLD in the tankmix protects yields by controlling diseases, such as anthracnose leaf blight and eyespot. The following table illustrates this yield advantage by comparing the yields of a weed-free check to fields that had V5 applications of Laudis and a tankmix of Laudis and Stratego YLD.

“Adding a fungicide to a herbicide tankmix sounds unconventional to some farmers. It means people are applying fungicide earlier than they are accustomed,” said Randy Myers, Bayer CropScience marketing manager for fungicides. “But, it’s becoming the management practice of choice for many. It has a number of benefits, the first of which is improving plant health and yield potential while safely targeting early-season weeds.”

“The increased yield is important, but is just one part of the equation,” said Jeff Springsteen, Bayer CropScience marketing manager for corn and soybean selective herbicides. “There is a convenience that comes with tankmixing Laudis and Stratego YLD, while saving the grower time and money. The combination also provides unmatched crop safety when compared to other HPPD herbicide-fungicide combinations. In fact, you can’t tankmix fungicides with several herbicides, such as Callisto®, Halex® or Impact®, but you can add Ignite® herbicide or glyphosate to the tankmix.”

The Laudis and Stratego YLD tankmix also provides an economic benefit off the field. Through the Bayer CropScience Innovation Plus™ Program, farmers can earn a rebate of up to $0.85 per acre on Laudis and $2.19 per acre on Stratego YLD for a total rebate of $3.04 per acre. For more information about the Innovation Plus Program growers can visit

Stratego YLD controls a broad spectrum of economically important diseases. Laudis controls more than 65 grass and broadleaf weeds, including those resistant to glyphosate-, PPO-, ALS-, triazine- and dicamba-based herbicides.
