Farmer: Herbicide’s Long-Lasting Residual Controls Weedy Fields

Weedy fields decorated with lambsquarters, ragweed, foxtails and nutsedge were a challenge for Ettrick, Wis., corn and soybean farmer John Vehrenkamp.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Weedy fields decorated with lambsquarters, ragweed, foxtails and nutsedge were a challenge for Ettrick, Wis., corn and soybean farmer John Vehrenkamp. He knew he needed a herbicide that would control these nuisances, and keep them down throughout the season.

After trying one-pass programs for the last 20 years, Vehrenkamp said he is most impressed with the residual control he saw with his latest program: “It was applied around the fourth week of May into the first week of June. The residual from that point…we didn’t notice any weeds. By July 5th, the corn started to canopy and take off. It had excellent control. We had an excellent year.”

Vehrenkamp says the residual in Capreno® herbicide also offered flexible application timing: “Capreno works well with Roundup® because you have a bigger window to spray.  For example, this year it has been wet. If it is wet, you can wait about a week or so and get in there as soon as possible. On the reverse side, if it was threatening rain, we could spray sooner because we know the Capreno is going to be there with the residual effect.”
