Managing Resistant Weeds Helps Protect Yields, Land Value

Iowa farmer says growers should work to prevent battle before it begins

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Troubling stories of glyphosate-resistant pigweeds from friends in the South reinforced Kyle Mehmen’s efforts to ward off resistance on his family’s farm.

The Plainfield, Iowa, farmer says managing glyphosate weed resistance is vital to MBS Family Farms, particularly since 90 percent of their acres are deep-till corn-on-corn, while remaining fields have corn-soybean rotation. He says rotating herbicide programs is key to successful weed management: “One of the big reasons we chose Corvus® herbicide plus atrazine is because it offers three modes of action on our corn crop. I also rotate my acres so that those with a one pass last year will be hit with a two pass this year.”

In addition to negatively impacting yields and bottom lines, Mehmen says resistant weeds are land value adversaries: “If glyphosate resistance isn’t important to a landowner right now, it should be soon. It’s not an issue of ‘if’ this thing comes, it’s ‘when’ it comes and to what degree. It could really de-value a farm if you’ve got a lot of weed resistance issues.”
