Bayer CropScience welcomes industry thought leaders to share insights on cutting-edge technology and the future of production agriculture
NASHVILLE, TN (March 2, 2012) The 2012 Ag Issues Form took place on February 28 – 29 in Nashville, Tennessee, where top researchers, industry experts and farmers from across the U.S. provided insights and answers to the tough questions currently facing agriculture. Topics ranged from food waste and global hunger to weed resistance and sustainability programs.
“The goal of the 2012 Ag Issues Forum was to spotlight the big challenges we’re facing globally, and explore the role agriculture plays in answering the call that these challenges pose,” says Beth Roden, External Communications Lead for Bayer CropScience. “The knowledgable speakers provided thought-provoking insights which led to engaging discussion and greater conversation about propelling the future of agriculture.”
Noted topics and speakers on the agenda for the 2012 Ag Issues Forum included:
- Kai Robertson from the Business for Social Responsibility, who reflected on the impact of food waste on the sustainability of the food production system.
- Bill Lapp, a Grain Economist with Advanced Economic Solutions, discussed ongoing domestic and global trends impacting food, fiber, and fuel production.
- Three industry experts participated in a weed resistance panel. They addressed this complex issue, noting the importance of proactively preventing weed resistance rather than dealing with the problem once it appears in the field, as well as the impact resistance is having on conservation practices and land values.
- Five producers from across the United States participated in a panel discussion which highlighted their practical efforts to advance sustainability and effectively share this message with consumers and neighbors alike.
- Dennis Treacy, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of Smithfield Foods shared how Smithfield has created a corporate social responsibility plan that allows the company to produce good food responsibly. He was joined by Suzy Friedman, Deputy Director, Working Lands, Environmental Defense Fund, who explained how organizations with different perspectives can work together to effectively advance sustainability efforts.
The event concluded with the announcement of John Shepherd, a Virginia farmer, as the 2012 Young Farmer Sustainability Award winner. Shepherd, 27, operates a 1,350-acre row crop operation and has implemented multiple sustainable practices for greater environmental stewardship. Watch a video featuring John here.
New at this year’s Ag Issues Forum was an interactive poster session at which representatives from Bayer CropScience were on hand to provide innovation updates on products and initiatives ranging from bee health research to regulatory and legislative updates and new product development.
