Campaign includes Homeowner Rebate, Parent Tool Kit, and Schools and Parks Savings Program
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (May 1, 2012) – Environmental Science, a division of Bayer CropScience LP, is helping maintain healthy homes and communities by educating homeowners, parents, and groundskeepers for schools and parks about the importance of fire ant prevention with the launch of the TopChoice® Fire Ant Prevention Campaign. As a part of the effort, a Homeowner Rebate, Parent Tool Kit and Schools and Parks Savings Program are available to help make fire ant prevention and control as simple and cost effective as possible.
“At Bayer, we believe that the best way to treat fire ant stings is to prevent fire ants in the first place,” said Cynthia Gigandet, TopChoice product marketing manager at Bayer Environmental Science. "We want consumers to know that there is a better way to prevent and control fire ant infestations. Through our Fire Ant Prevention Campaign, we are giving homeowners, parents and groundskeepers at schools, parks, and recreational areas like ballfields, the tools they need to understand the health risks associated with fire ants, while simultaneously helping them understand how to prevent fire ant populations."
The Dangers of Fire Ants
Fire ants infest more than 325 million acres across the southern portion of the United States and pose a serious and growing public health threat, injuring more than 20 million people each year with their stings. Colonies of fire ants can grow to comprise up to 500,000 members. Just one colony can have multiple queens capable of laying 1,500 eggs each, per day.
When a colony is disturbed, hundreds, sometimes thousands, of ants will attack an intruder, inflicting painful stings that, in the most severe cases, can be life threatening. Studies show that 10 to 15 percent of those stung by fire ants experience severe localized allergic reactions, with 1 to 2 percent experiencing dangerous systemic reactions that, in rare cases, can result in death.
Homeowners can protect their homes and families for less through the Homeowner Rebate Program, which offers $15 off any TopChoice treatment. To benefit from the program, homeowners can simply schedule the treatment with a lawn care professional, print out the rebate form available at www.nofireants.com, and return the completed rebate form and the TopChoice receipt to the Bayer TopChoice Rebate Program. Full details are available at www.nofireants.com under “Homeowner”. This promotion is available through December 31, 2012.
Parents can help prevent fire ants from invading their children’s local school grounds by downloading the Parent Tool Kit, also available at www.nofireants.com. Parents can request that schools, parks, and recreational areas use TopChoice to keep children safe from fire ants by mailing the TopChoice letter and form to their child's school administrator or local parks department. Full program details are available at www.nofireants.com under “Parents”.
By doing so, parents can help facilities save with the TopChoice, “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” promotion. School administrators and groundskeepers can protect students and staff by taking advantage of the TopChoice “Protect Against Fire Ants” program, which offers the following savings options based on fire ant control and turf care needs:
- Option 1: Buy 2 bags of TopChoice, receive 1 bag of TopChoice free
- Option 2: Buy 4 bags of TopChoice + Fertilizer, receive 1 bag of TopChoice free
The program is offered to private and public pre-schools/nursery schools, elementary and secondary school districts, colleges and universities, nursing homes and city, state and national parks and recreation departments for use on their grounds in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California (Coachella Valley only), Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The promotion is available through December 31, 2012.
“Bayer realizes that these groundskeepers have zero-tolerance zones when it comes to fire ants, and management programs are critical in protecting our children and pets,” said Gigandet. “We are committed to combating fire ants in recreational areas and helping protect healthy green spaces where our children and pets are safe from fire ant stings.”
TopChoice is a low-dose, non-bait granular insecticide that requires just one annual application by a licensed professional. It provides superb control of fire ants for up to one year, virtually eliminating existing mounds and preventing new mounds from forming.
Using the lowest dose of pesticide required to provide effective, year-long control of fire ants, as well as fleas, ticks and mole crickets, TopChoice provides homeowners and others the peace of mind of knowing they’ve taken the steps necessary to protect their families and communities from the threat of fire ants.
