Response of Deltapine®Seed Spacing – Coastal East

March 16, 2019

Trial Objective

  • The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the yield response of current and new Deltapine® cotton varieties to seed spacing.

Research Site Details

  • Deltapine® cotton varieties planted:
    • — DP 1725 B2XF
    • — DP 1835 B3XF
    • — DP 1840 B3XF
    • — DP 1851 B3XF
  • Number of seeds per foot of row:
    • — 1.5
    • — 2.5
    • — 3.5
    • — 4.5
  • Plots were single strip trials that were 8-12 rows wide and 500 feet long.
  • All agronomic practices were per local standards.

Understanding the Results

  • In this study, average lint yields were generally greater when seeds were planted at 2.5 to 3.5 seeds/ft of a row with the lowest yield observed at 4.5 seeds/ft of a row, with the exception of DP 1646 B2XF.
  • Average yields for DP 1646 B2XF were inconsistent from 2.5 to 4.5 seeds/ft of row

What Does This Mean for Your Farm?

  • Cotton growers in the upper Southeast typically plant seeds at a rate of 2 to 3 seeds/ft of a row, regardless of row width; this study helps confirm that this seed spacing is ideal for most situations.
