National Mosquito Control Awareness Week Reminds Everyone to Prevent and Protect from Mosquitoes

June 21, 2015

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (June 22, 2015) – Mosquitoes aren’t only nuisances; they’re the deadliest creatures on earth. They routinely transmit diseases, affecting thousands of people in the U.S. every year with symptoms that range from fevers to lifelong debilitating consequences, even death. Environmental Science, a division of Bayer CropScience LP, continues to emphasize the importance of mosquito control during National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, June 21-27.

“We know how crucial public mosquito control is to the health and well-being of communities across the country,” said Gordon Morrison, business manager for the Bayer vector control business in the United States. “We fully support the efforts to educate communities about the risks posed by mosquitoes in our daily lives, and Mosquito Control Awareness Week provides a great opportunity to do that.”

The American Mosquito Control Association suggests understanding and following the three Ds to help protect from mosquitoes:

  • Drain: Mosquito problems originate from water-filled containers or areas of standing water, as immature mosquitoes require water to develop. Eliminate standing water whenever possible in places such as buckets, gutters, pet water dishes, tree holes, abandoned swimming pools or tires, drainage ditches and other areas capable of breeding mosquitoes. Contact the local mosquito control district or health department for assistance, if needed.
  • Dress: Close to 200 mosquito species in the United States are more attracted to dark clothing and can easily bite through tight-fitting garments. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to avoid mosquito bites. Long sleeves and pants will provide the most protection.
  • Defend: Use a mosquito repellent that has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and apply according to the label directions.*

“Professional mosquito workers provide a vital service to communities throughout the United States and worldwide,” Morrison said. “We are excited to provide mosquito abatement specialists with a new solution to protect communities against mosquitoes.”

New DeltaGard® Insecticide for vector control specialists has received the EPA’s reduced-risk designation for wide area mosquito control and provides fast and effective control of adult mosquitoes at extremely low application rates.

“Through our vector control advocacy, we do all we can to raise awareness of the public health threat posed by mosquitoes,” Morrison said. “Bayer is committed to working closely with mosquito control professionals to provide superior solutions for protecting public health, quality of life and the outdoor economy.”

About Mosquito Control Awareness Week
June 21-27, 2015, has been declared the eighteenth annual “National Mosquito Control Awareness Week” by the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA). The AMCA, an international organization of nearly 2,000 public health professionals, has been dedicated to preserving the public’s health and well-being through safe, environmentally sound mosquito control programs since 1935. During “Mosquito Week” the AMCA’s goal is to educate the general public about the significance of mosquitoes in their daily lives and the important service provided by mosquito control workers throughout the United States and worldwide.

Displays, lectures, demonstrations and educational programs for children are just a few events which will focus on mosquitoes as disease carriers and pests. Information on the mosquito life cycle and tips on how to eliminate mosquito egg-laying sites around homes will help citizens reduce the numbers of mosquitoes in their own neighborhoods.
