New Variety of Hard Red Winter Wheat Is Excellent Companion Variety for Popular WestBred® KELDIN Variety

September 19, 2018

WB4311 offers winter hardiness, disease resistance and excellent milling and baking quality

ST. LOUIS, 9/21/2018 – Excellent test weight. Winter hardiness. High protein levels. These are just a few of the attributes Northwest wheat growers can look forward to when WestBred® wheat commercially releases its newest variety, WB4311, this fall.

The Hard Red Winter Wheat variety is recommended as an add-on variety to a tried-and-true popular variety for this area.

“WB4311 is an ideal companion variety for KELDIN,” says Lindsay Crigler, WestBred Technical Product Manager, Northwest Region. “While KELDIN offers some great features, WB4311 has improved standability and Yellow (Stripe) Rust resistance. I recommend WB4311 for high to low rainfall and in stressed conditions.”

Growers who plant the new wheat variety can also expect:

  • Excellent emergence
  • Excellent tillering potential
  • Very good straw strength
  • Higher protein
  • Excellent milling/baking quality

Geoff Schulz of Reardan Seed Company, says the new variety also helps Northwest wheat growers to meet end-user demand.

“From a milling and baking perspective, samples of bread baked with WB4311 wheat have the visual, physical and taste characteristics that artisan bakers seek,” Schulz says. “Couple that level of quality with agronomic attributes designed for dryland growers, and you have a new variety that really shined in initial testing.”
