Sargent County Growers Take Third Place in North Dakota National Wheat Yield Contest

Growers credit achievement to WestBred® wheat variety
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 10, 2017 – WestBred® wheat is proud to announce Sargent county wheat growers, John and Sam Hofer, won third place in North Dakota in the National Wheat Yield Contest in the Spring Wheat—Dryland category. The competition, organized by the National Wheat Foundation, champions yield-maximizing production practices employed by innovative wheat growers. The Hofers placed third in the state after a yield increase of 86 percent over the most recent USDA-NASS published county average data.
John and Sam Hofer achieved a yield of 104.2 bushels per acre with WestBred variety WB-MAYVILLE.
“We tried WestBred wheat in 2015 and were very impressed with the yields. We knew it would be a high-yielding variety again this year,” said John Hofer.
More than 170 individual growers across wheat-growing counties in the United States entered to compete in four categories: irrigated winter wheat, dryland winter wheat, irrigated spring wheat and dryland spring wheat.
The National Wheat Yield Contest recognized national winners in each category as well as the top three state winners per category. Winners were determined by evaluating the yield percentage increase above the USDA-NASS county averages. The inaugural contest encouraged growers to innovate, exchange knowledge and employ the newest available technology.
“For growing techniques, we start by planting good seed, and treating it with seed treatments. We put together a strong fertility program. We also put on two applications of fungicide, both early and late. We also like to put on a late application of nitrogen,” said John Hofer.
