RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (April 9, 2015) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville has recognized Bayer CropScience for its commitment to supporting agricultural education by inducting the company into the school’s Legacy Society in a ceremony on March 28. The prestigious honor is reserved for those whose contributions have truly left a legacy for students and faculty who have been directly impacted by their philanthropy. To be a member of the Legacy Society, an individual, a foundation, or a corporation must have cumulative contributions to Texas A&M University-Kingsville in excess of $100,000. Bayer CropScience has specifically supported agricultural research and development at the school’s Citrus Center.

“Bayer CropScience is proud to support the groundbreaking research being done at Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Citrus Center,” said Steve Olson, marketing business manager-Horticulture at Bayer CropScience. “We chose to donate to the Citrus Center, as the Center’s mission aligns with our commitment to bring new tools and innovation to specialty crops, including fruit, tree nuts and vegetables. The developments made by the staff and students at the Center will increase crop safety and strengthen the productivity of citrus growers in Texas and around the world.”

Specifically for citrus crops, Bayer CropScience supports research for the control of Asian citrus psyllid worldwide through various initiatives including insect trapping, parasitic insect rearing and release, sustainable model farm practices and the generation of solutions that directly impact the pathogen that causes Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as citrus greening.

“Bayer CropScience is dedicated to global sustainability, recognizing that with population growth comes the increased need for food, feed, fiber and renewable raw materials,” said Dr. Mamoudou Sétamou, associate professor at Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Citrus Center. “Bayer CropScience recognizes that diseases, such as citrus greening disease, greatly affects growers’ ability to meet this need, and since 2004 they have supported Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Citrus Center. Their support will allow our research in vector management to reduce the spread of this disease that affects so many citrus crops globally.”

In addition to the ceremony, Bayer CropScience will be recognized with a plaque on the Wall of Honor at Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Memorial Student Union Building.
